Traffic Relief Special Election December 10th

Traffic on Center Street is the most mentioned issue facing our town.

The Arkansas Highway Department has finally agreed for a plan for traffic relief.

A new route for Hwy 10 will go from the Hwy 96 intersection thru private property and city property to meet the existing Hwy 10 near Pink Bud. The entire new section and the rest of the existing Hwy 10 to US Hwy 71 will be either 4 or 5 lanes once completed.

The total cost of the project is $33 million dollars, Greenwood must come up with $5 million dollars for the project to begin.

To fund the project without increasing taxes the City Council voted to ask the citizens permission to re-work the existing bond.

The Special Election on December 10th will have two questions: 1) To refund (payoff) the existing bond that paid for the police station. 2) In order to do that and get the funds for the road project, extend the existing quarter cent sales tax to fund a street improvement bond of $5 million dollars.

Both issues have to pass or nothing can happen. The vote must be "For" refunding the bonds AND "For" street improvement bonds. Neither issue can proceed without the other.

Polling location is at City Hall today (Friday) until 5pm, Monday 8am-5pm and Tuesday (Election Day) 7:30am-7:30pm

You may also vote early at the Sebastian County Courthouse in Fort Smith today and Monday 8am-5pm
